Aaron Judge: 16 SO (80%) in 20 AB in round one; BB/SO .250. Season BB/SO: .611

Aaron Judge is a Strike Out (SO) machine. Even more than he is a Base on Balls (BB) machine. Judge led the major league with 208 SO and led the American Conference with 127 BB. Joey Votto led the NC with 134 BB.

In the five game first round series against Cleveland, which his Yankees won, Judge had one hit, a double, in 20 At Bats (AB), plus four BB. Judge had 16 SO. Judge SO in 80% of his AB. His BB/SO (4/16) was .250. For the season it was .611 (127/208).

Strike Outs to Walks Ratio ... for Batters! Sunday, March 29, 2009

If the strike outs to walks ratio provides useful information about pitchers, why not for batters?  For good batters, maybe it should be reversed: the walks to strike outs ratio.

In a previous post I recommended that pitchers be examined on OPS+, a tool to evaluate batters.

Not bad. Judge is number 9 in BB/SO. The eight above Judge all hit fewer than 40 HR. The rank column is for HR, including ties. Not surprisingly, Joey Votto has the best BB/SO ratio. Trout and Rizzo are the only others with more BB than SO. Ouch.

Among players with OPS greater than 1.000 J.D. Martinez has the lowest BB/SO: .414, number 26.

The most horrific BB/SO: Rougned Odor: .198. 32 BB and 162 SO. That is mind boggling. In addition to the fewest BB among these 41 batters with at least 30 HR, Odor has the lowest BA, OBP, SLG, OPS.
