Ex Yankees did well in 2018 World Series: Pearce, Eovaldi, Hill, Nunez.

Steve Pearce won the Willie Mays World Series MVP award for having the best performance in 2018. See previous post if you don't know what the heck that is:

Willie Mays World Series MVP award? Willie Mays? Monday, October 29, 2018 9:40 AM

Pearce is a journeyman who improved with age. Here are some of his many transactions that cover his brief time with the Yankees:

March 27, 2012: Released by the Minnesota Twins.
March 29, 2012: Signed as a Free Agent with the New York Yankees.
June 2, 2012: Purchased by the Baltimore Orioles from the New York Yankees.
July 28, 2012: Selected off waivers by the Houston Astros from the Baltimore Orioles.
August 27, 2012: Purchased by the New York Yankees from the Houston Astros.
September 29, 2012: Selected off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles from the New York Yankees.
April 27, 2014: Released by the Baltimore Orioles.
April 29, 2014: Signed as a Free Agent with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Yankees letting him go was nothing unusual for Pearce. They assigned Pearce in 2012 to their AAA team where he had 227 PA and .986 OPS, then let him go to Houston, then reacquired Pearce in late August. Pearce then had his final 30 major league plate appearances in 2012: .580 OPS. So the Yankees had Steve Pearce, not once but twice in 2012, and let him go, not once but twice in 2012. So, no matter how tenuous the connection Steve Pearce went from the Yankees to the Red Sox ... with Baltimore (2013 OPS+ 157), Tampa (2016 OPS+ 148), Baltimore again, Toronto (2018 OPS+ 137) in between.

Career 2007-2018: 2,445 PA, OPS+ 111. Pearce had learned to hit and was improving with age.

In 2018 Steve Pearce reappeared with the Boston Red Sox for his final 165 PA of the 2018 regular season: .901 OPS, 141 OPS+. In his 2018 43 regular season PA against the Yankees: 1.152 OPS; 5 home runs, 14 RBI.

Steve Pearce, World Series MVP. Steve Pearce, former Yankee.

Nathan Eovaldi, starting pitcher.

December 19, 2014: Traded by the Miami Marlins with Domingo German and Garrett Jones to the New York Yankees for David PhelpsMartin Prado and cash.
November 23, 2016: Released by the New York Yankees.
February 14, 2017: Signed as a Free Agent with the Tampa Bay Rays.
July 25, 2018: Traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Boston Red Sox for Jalen Beeks.

Eovaldi was a starting pitcher for the Yankees in 2015 and 2016.

2015: 14-3, .824 (led AL), 27 starts, 154 innings
2016: 9-8, .529, 21 starts, 124 innings

His last Yankee start was in Boston Aug. 10, 2016. Eovaldi left after one shutout inning. He needed Tommy John surgery and was a free agent after the 2016. As shown above, the Yankees released Eovaldi Nov. 23, 2016.

Eovaldi did not pitch in 2017 but pitched well enough for Tampa in 2018 that the Red Sox traded for him July, 25, 2018. With Boston: 11 starts, one relief, 54 innings, 132 ERA+.

The Yankees could have signed Eovaldi to an inexpensive contract and hoped that he was effective again after missing the 2017 season. They did not. The Yankees could have traded for Eovaldi in July 2018 but did not.

In the 2018 regular season Eovaldi started four games against the Yankees: 23 innings, 1.93 ERA, 1-1.

With Tampa Eovaldi was roughed up in Yankee Stadium June 15 and lost 5-0.

With the Boston Red Sox:
Aug. 4 in Fenway Park: won, 8 shutout innings, 3 hits
Sep. 18 in Yankee Stadium: no decision in Yankee win, 6 shutout innings, 2 hits
Sep. 29 in Fenway Park tune up: no decision in Yankee win, 2 innings, 1 hit, 1 unearned run

In the division series, if the Yankees had Eovaldi and the Red Sox didn't, the Yankees might have won the series, which they lost 3-1. Eovaldi won game three 16-1 in Yankee Stadium putting Boston up 2-1: 7 innings, 5 hits, 1 run.

Rich Hill , 38 year old lefty starting pitcher
July 1, 2014: Purchased by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim from the Boston Red Sox.
July 9, 2014: Released by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
July 16, 2014: Signed as a Free Agent with the New York Yankees.
October 30, 2014: Granted Free Agency.

Hill pitched in 14 games for the Yankees in 2014, all in relief: 5 innings, 1.69 ERA. So, who cares, right? Hill bounced all over the place, including multiple stints with the Red Sox. In 2016 Hill threw 76 innings for Oakland, then 34 for the Dodgers. Then Hill became a starting pitcher for the Dodgers:
2017: 12-8, 25 starts, 135 innings, 125 ERA+
2018: 11-5, 24 starts, 132 innings, 106 ERA+

In the 2018 World Series Rich Hill started game four in Dodger Stadium with the Red Sox up 2-1 in games: 6.33 innings, 1 hit, 1 run. In the top of the 7th, Dodgers led 4-0. Hill walked Bogaerts then struck Eduardo Nunez, another former Yankee. Hill was then removed from the game. Red Sox won 9-6.

Rich Hill pitched well for the Dodgers in 2017 and 2018 in both the regular season and the tournament.

Eduardo Nunez, infielder and screwball

Yankee 2010-2013: 827 PA, 88 OPS+

February 25, 2004: Signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent.
April 7, 2014: Traded by the New York Yankees to the Minnesota Twins for Miguel Sulbaran (minors).
July 28, 2016: Traded by the Minnesota Twins to the San Francisco Giants for Adalberto Mejia.
July 26, 2017: Traded by the San Francisco Giants to the Boston Red Sox for Shaun Anderson (minors) and Gregory Santos (minors).
November 2, 2017: Granted Free Agency.
February 18, 2018: Signed as a Free Agent with the Boston Red Sox.

With the Red Sox in 2018: 502 PA, OPS+81.

In WS, game one in Fenway Park: Red Sox leading 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th, two out, two on Nunez pinch hit for Devers and hit a three run home run to break open the game. 8-4 final score.

In 18 inning game three Nunez was 2 for 4 and both helped and hurt the Red Sox. Read about it elsewhere. Red Sox lost game three 3-2 but won the World Series 4-1.
