2005 and 2007: AL MVP and Home Run leader. 6,520 of 12,207 PA with the Yankees: 53.4%. Yankee OPS+ 136.
Steinbrenner petty vindictiveness rears its ugly head again: Dellin Betances arbitration. Saturday, February 18, 2017
Here is the Yankee triumvirate, which deals out salary justice and retribution, Steinbrenner fashion:
Hal Steinbrenner, part owner and managing general partner
Randy Levine, president
Brian Cashman, general manager...
Paying for dirt on players: Steinbrenner, Selig, Manfred. Steinbrenner Kids? Saturday, January 31, 2015 ...
Steinbrenner Kids: add tacky to dumb and lazy: trying to void A-Rod's bonus. Tuesday, January 27, 2015 ...
Motive: petty vindictiveness and self loathing that they gave A-Rod a new contract that they now regret.

Jacoby Ellsbury
Position: Centerfielder
Bats: Left • Throws: Left
6-1, 195lb
Team: New York Yankees (majors, 60-day IL)
Born: September 11, 1983 (Age: 36 and 73 days) in Madras, OR
Musical chairs Yankee style. Sunday, December 8, 2013
Hal, the Steinbrenner Kid who is running the Yankees these days, supposedly indicated that getting under the not very soft salary cap is a goal not a requirement, that he would be OK with exceeding the cap if needed.
Say what?
After all the junk that has occurred Yankee fans should be very upset if the Yanks panic and exceed the cap for 2014. What a wimp. Geez, set a policy and stick to it...
The one position the Yankees did not need to fill was center field. However, incumbent Brett Gardner is being replaced with Jacoby Ellsbury. Both are good fielders, good base stealers and neither hits home runs, except for the 32 (15 home, 17 road) Ellsbury inexplicably hit in 2011, his only season in double figures.
Ellsbury: Born: September 11, 1983 OPS+ 108; 241 SB, 46 CS; OPS+ 2013 114
Gardner: Born: August 24, 1983 OPS+ 97; 161 SB, 38 CS; OPS+ 2013 108
Ellsbury is an upgrade but hardly one worth $153 million over seven years. That money could have been spent on new pitchers. The Yankees have lost starters Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes and not added any pitching. They have resigned Hiroki Kuroda (born Feb 10, 1975) for one year. Gerald Ford was president when he was born.
With so many holes to fill, why fill a non-hole?

Both Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle played their final season at age 36. Ellsbury is 36 but played his final season at age 33. Sounds tragic, doesn't it, especially considering that Ellsbury tried hard, played through injuries and even accepted diminished roles, like pinch running, without complaint or any visible sign of resentment.
June 4, 2002: Drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 23rd round of the 2002 amateur draft, but did not sign.
June 7, 2005: Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 1st round (23rd pick) of the 2005 amateur draft. Player signed July 1, 2005.
October 31, 2013: Granted Free Agency.
December 7, 2013: Signed as a Free Agent with the New York Yankees.
November 20, 2019: Released by the New York Yankees.
Ellsbury played with the Red Sox 2007-2013 (OPS+ 105) and was rookie of the year in 2008. But he played only 18 games in 2010 and 74 games in 2012. In his four full seasons with Boston OPS+ and Stolen Bases:
2008 88 (50 SB)
2009 98 (70 SB)
2011 146 (39 SB)
2013 113 (53 SB)
So the Yankees were expecting outstanding speed and fielding in center field.

Ellsbury played for the Yankees 2014-2017, four years: OPS+ 95 (100 is league average). The Yankees released Ellsbury a few days ago. It was initially thought that the release was to make room on their roster. But then, ...
Yankee general manager Brian Cashman was criticized in the mainstream media for this obviously bad signing, which all claimed they had thought all along, Yeah, right. Some even claimed that it was the worst free agent signing of all time.
Is that why Cashman did what he did or was that the Yankee plan even before the criticism?
Yankees claim Jacoby Ellsbury went behind their backs as money fight escalates
By Ken Davidoff and George A. King III November 22, 2019 https://nypost.com/
... heated battle with the Yankees, who released him Wednesday, for what’s left of the historically awful, seven-year, $153-million contract he signed in December 2013 — as well as, possibly, some of the money he already has pocketed...
On Friday, multiple sources told The Post, right after Ellsbury cleared release waivers, the Yankees sent a letter to the Players Association notifying them of their intention to convert Ellsbury’s contract from guaranteed to non-guaranteed, thereby liberating them from the outfielder’s $21 million salary for 2020 as well as a $5 million buyout of the $21 million team option for 2021. The basis of the effort is the Yankees’ contention Ellsbury, who missed the entire 2018 and 2019 seasons due to multiple injuries, received medical treatment at Progressive Medical Center in Atlanta for multiple years without the Yankees’ authorization. The exact time period is in question, hence the uncertainty about how much, if any, of the $127 million the Yankees already have paid Ellsbury will be in play.
The union, livid with the Yankees’ maneuver, made it clear it would challenge the team on Ellsbury’s behalf and hinted at a willingness to play offense as well as defense.
“The Players Association will vigorously defend any action taken against Jacoby or his contract and is investigating potential contract violations by his employer,” the union said in a statement. “Until further notice, we will have no comment.” ...
A source said Ellsbury, who last played in the 2017 American League Championship Series, was preparing to play in 2020. The 36-year-old surely would have to agree to a minor league contract somewhere based on his recent inactivity.

Four Yankee outfielders (3 rookies) injured crashing into walls in less than a year. Outlaw catches on the warning track. Sunday, April 1, 2018
For our amusement we require players, especially outfielders, to run full speed into walls while looking in the opposite direction. Isn't it time this be relegated to other now outlawed acts like crashing into the catcher and smashing middle infielders? ...
Here are the four Yankee outfielders injured:
Jacoby Ellsbury: Born: September 11, 1983 (Age: 34 and 202 days)
May 24, 2017; 1,162nd major league game. Missed 30 games with a concussion suffered when he crashed into the center field wall in the second inning.
