Career Home Run record 1920, 100 years ago.

Babe Ruth set Yankee records for Home Runs for season and career in his first season, 100 years ago.  Sunday, June 7, 2020

Babe Ruth joined the New York Yankees in 1920…

Wally Pipp was the first Yankee to lead the American League (AL) in home runs: 1916 (12) and 1917 (9)…

In 1919 in his final season with the Boston Red Sox Babe Ruth set a new record for home runs in a season…

Ruth's 29 home runs in 1919 are only five fewer than Wally Pipp's Yankees career record of 34…

Pipp's 11 (in 1920) would increase his Yankee career number from 34 to 45. Obviously, Ruth's 54 in 1920 would break both Pipp Yankee home records for a season (12) and career…

Ruth passed Pipp for good August 26, 1920 with number 44. By the time Pipp hit Yankee career home run 44, Ruth had 48.

This is the first in a series of posts on leaders in career home runs. Next: 1921.
