Cleveland most recently won the old World Series in 1948, 72 years ago. Pittsburgh most recently won the major league championship in 1979, 41 years ago. Cleveland's drought is 31 years longer than Pittsburgh's; 31 is one less than that just ended by the Dodgers. The 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates ended a 35 year drought.
There are 30 major league teams. In 1960 there were 16 teams. By then only the Orioles and Phillies had not won the World Series at least once. Of the 14 expansion teams these six have never won the World Series:
In 1998 the Yankees set a record for most regular season wins with 114. In 2001 the Seattle Mariners broke that record with 116 wins; the Mariners then lost the ALCS to the Yankees. 2001 is the most recent season that the Mariners played in the post season tournament. The Mariners have played in the tournament only four times 1977-2020, never advancing to the finals, the World Series.
2014-2020: in those seven seasons, seven different teams have won the tournament. Those are the most recent championship seasons for those seven teams. See the table below with championship teams going back to 1948 to include the most recent by Cleveland.
The table has the number of years from the current year when a team won the championship. Another column has the number of years since that team's previous championship. If none, that field contains an x. The largest number by far is 108 for the 2016 Chicago Cubs. Next largest: White Sox and Red Sox: 88 and 86.
The Giants had a drought of 56 years between the 1954 New York Giants and the 2010 San Francisco Giants. Once the Giants finally won in San Francisco, they also won in 2012 and 2014.
The 1948 Cleveland Indians ended a 28 year drought since they beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1920.
The Brooklyn Dodgers won their only World Series in 1955. In Los Angeles the Dodgers then won in 1959, 1963, 1965, 1981, 1988. In 2020 the Dodgers ended a 32 year drought.
The 1957 Milwaukee Braves ended a 43 year drought since the Boston Braves last won the World Series. The 1995 Atlanta Braves ended a 38 year team drought. But the Braves have now gone 25 years since their most recent championship.
The Yankees have won just one 2001-2020: in 2009
The Tigers since 1948 won in 1968 and 1984.
The Oakland Athletics won three in a row 1972, 1973, 1974 ending a 42 year drought since the Philadelphia Athletics last won. The Athletics have not won since 1989, 31 years ago.
The Reds won in 1975 and 1976, ending a 35 year drought. The Reds won most recently in 1990, 30 years ago.
The 1987 Minnesota Twins ended a 63 year drought since they previously won ... as the Washington Senators. The Twins won again in 1991, 29 years ago.
The Phillies won in 1980 and 2008.
The Royals won in 2015, ending a 30 year drought.
Two teams in recent years won their first:
2017 Houston, which started in 1962 in the NL.
2019 Washington/Montreal, which started in 1969.
Scan the table and make your own observations:
Expansion teams since 1961 are dead weight. Super League! Tuesday, March 28, 2017
Of the 30 teams, 13 won more regular season games than they lost. The table below is sorted on percent of games won. Of the 13 winning teams, only number 13, the Angels, is an expansion team.
Cruise through the table and you'll see a clear pattern. While the teams in existence in 1960 are saddled with the Chicago teams, which have each won only one WS since 1961, most have been uniformly successful.
