Mickey Mantle played shortstop and second in 1954 and 1955 in important games.

Mickey Mantle played shortstop in the minors and first base in his final two seasons (1967, 1968) after his legs had failed him. But he learned to play center field, which was his primary position during his great seasons: 1952-1964.

This post has details on the only games he played at shortstop, second or third. Here is a career Defensive Position summary in baseball-reference.com, including multiple positions in the same game:

G
1B261
2B1
3B1
SS4
LF130
CF1,730
RF146
PH125

I found 8 games in which Mantle played SS, 2B, 3B; including one in which he played the entire game at SS.

Stengel may have outsmarted himself as the Yanks won only one of 8 games.

Note that Mantle hit a 10th inning walk off home run July 22, 1954 after switching to SS.
