Don Mattingly fielding: Total Zone Rating (TZR) and dWAR.

Don Mattingly should be in the Hall of Fame.

Don Mattingly should NOT be in the Hall of Fame.

Don Mattingly was a great hitter.

Don Mattingly was NOT a great hitter.

Don Mattingly was a great fielder.

Don Mattingly was NOT a great fielder.

This post addresses the last point.

Data for this summary chart is below. Fielding data is convoluted and so is this post. Some fielding data is in batting data, which can be filtered in ad hoc queries. However, fielding data is not an ad hoc query option. After a while, the most practical thing was to complete the year by year lists in the two categories below.

Position Player WAR Calculations and Details

WAR for position players has six components:

Batting Runs
Baserunning Runs
Runs added or lost due to Grounding into Double Plays in DP situations
Fielding Runs
Positional Adjustment Runs
Replacement level Runs (based on playing time)

...

Rdef. Fielding Runs

Fielding measures obviously have a lot of controversy surrounding them. Previously, Baseball-Reference used Sean Smith's Total Zone Rating for all seasons. With our 2012 update, we have switched to using Baseball Info Solutions Defensive Runs Saved for seasons since its introduction in 2003, and TZR for previous seasons...

Rpos, Positional Adjustment Runs

If you take a quick look at the batting performance by defensive position, you'll quickly see that teams are willing to sacrifice offense at "defensive" positions (stats are prorated to 650 plate appearances)...

When one quantifies these differences and also looks at the changes in fielding performance when players move to different positions, we can estimate the average differences between positions.

Current values (per 1350 (150*9) innings played) are:

C: +9 runs
SS: +7 runs
2B: +3 runs
CF: +2.5 runs
3B: +2 runs
RF: -7 runs
LF: -7 runs
1B: -9.5 runs
DH: -15 runs
P: see Pitcher Positional Adjustment

Total Zone Data

The total zone data presented here was designed and calculated by Sean Smith (BaseballProjection.com). Sean has produced, in our opinion, the finest defensive metrics around utilizing play-by-play data. These measurements compare favorably with direct observation techniques such as Ultimate Zone Rating and Plus/Minus. Since these use play-by-play data, we can apply them to seasons all the way back to the dawn of the retrosheet era. Below is Sean's explanation of what is included on the site:

Based on Baseball Info Solutions defensive runs saved from 2003 on
and total zone rating developed by Sean Smith of BaseballProjection.com previously
oWAR -- Offensive Wins Above Replacement (everything but Fielding)
The same statistic as Wins Above Replacement for Position
Players (WAR), but with the fielding value excluded.
oWAR + dWAR does not equal WAR.
Adding would count positions twice.
Contains the factor for batting stats, baserunning, a positional adjustment, and the replacement player adjustment.
Factors developed by Sean Smith of BaseballProjection.com
WAR -- Wins Above Replacement for position players
A single number that presents the number of wins the player added
to the team above what a replacement player (think AAA or AAAA) would add.

0-2 Reserve, < 0 Replacement Level
Developed by Sean Smith of BaseballProjection.com
