It's never mentioned but the Chicago Cubs manager, Lou Klein (48-58), their second of 1965, started two young rookies September 9, 1965 in Dodger Stadium against Dodger lefty ace Sandy Koufax, who pitched a perfect game that night. This game was the MLB debut for:
Don Young: Born: October 18, 1945
Byron Browne: Born: December 27, 1942
Cubs starting lineup:
1 | Don Young | CF |
2 | Glenn Beckert | 2B |
3 | Billy Williams | RF |
4 | Ron Santo | 3B |
5 | Ernie Banks | 1B |
6 | Byron Browne | LF |
7 | Chris Krug | C |
8 | Don Kessinger | SS |
9 | Bob Hendley | P |
Koufax did have to face three Hall of Fame Cubs: Williams, Santo, Banks. The first seven Cubs were 0 for 3. Both pinch hitters for batters 8 and 9 struck out. Koufax had 14 SO. Ten of eleven Cubs batters struck out at least once; not Kessinger in two AB.
But of the 27 outs Koufax got, six were against the two playing in their first major league game. Two more were against the opposing pitcher. That's 8/27 = 29.6%.
The Dodgers got one hit in eight innings. The only run was unearned and scored without the hit. One hit total for both teams in the entire game, which lasted 1:43. What a boring game that must have been. The final two outs were SO by the two PH. BORING!
After the game:
Cubs 65-77
Dodgers 80-61; Koufax 22-7.
