But last night:

New York Yankees reliever Brooks Kriske throws 4 wild pitches in 10th; Boston Red Sox rally to win espn.com/mlb

Enrique Hernandez hit a two-run double that tied the game with two outs in the ninth inning, and Boston took advantage of a record four wild pitches by Kriske in the 10th to rally past New York 5-4 on Thursday.

Kriske (1-1) allowed Boston's final two runs for a blown save, becoming the first major leaguer to throw four wild pitches in a single extra inning, according to STATS. His four wild pitches are tied for the most in any inning and for the most in a game by any pitcher this season.

All of them came on splitters that bounced.

"It was just pure execution," said Kriske, optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after the loss. "It's part of the game. I've got to do a better job." (Duh)

New York took a 4-3 lead in the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Brett Gardner that scored Tyler Wade. But Boston quickly tied it in the bottom half thanks in large part to Kriske's quartet of wild pitches. His first one moved automatic runner Rafael Devers to third base, and a second pitch in the dirt allowed him to score.

After Xander Bogaerts walked, Kriske's control issues continued. Two more wild pitches got Bogaerts to third, setting up Hunter Renfroe's game-ending sacrifice fly to right.

Note the THREE blown saves (BS). Also, Luis Cessa threw only FIVE pitches in breezing through the 8th inning but Yankee manager Aaron Boone stuck with his ill fated game plan to have Chad Green "save" the game by pitching the 9th with a lead. Aroldis Chapman had pitched the two prior days. Boone thinks that made Chapman and any of his relief pitchers too tired to pitch a third consecutive day. Mute point. Chapman would have blown it. He should be released.

Obviously, the Yankees need to fire manager Aaron Boone to prevent him from ever using Aroldis Chapman again: Mets 10, Yankees 5. Sunday, July 4, 2021

For some bizarre reason Boone decided to protect a one run lead in the seventh and last inning with disgraced and disastrous closer Aroldis Chapman. In his previous game Chapman negated the seven first inning runs the Yankees scored off Shohei Ohtani by being the primary reason the Angels scored seven runs in the 9th inning. Chapman walked three and then gave up a grand slam home run. Angels 11, Yankees 8.

Starting pitcher Montgomery also threw a wild pitch, so the Yankees had a total of 5 WP. The Cubs had 7 WP in a 1914 game. Since then there have been 6 WP in a game 8 times, all between 1969-2017. And 34 games with 5 WP, including this Yankee game; 19 of the 34  2000-2021.

Finally, from those thrilling days of yesteryear: 60 years ago the legendary 1961 Yankees played three games in Fenway Park on July 21, 22, 23. All three were decided in the 9th inning.
