Salvador Perez hit home run number 45 for the season. Here are the MLB leaders:
1. | Guerrero • TOR | 46 |
2. | Perez • KCR | 45 |
3. | Ohtani • LAA | 44 |
4. | Semien • TOR | 39 |
Tatis • SDP | 39 | |
6. | Gallo • 2TM | 37 |
7. | Judge • NYY | 35 |
Olson • OAK | 35 | |
Duvall • 2TM | 35 | |
10. | Muncy • LAD | 34 |
Seager • SEA | 34 | |
Lowe • TBR | 34 | |
Devers • BOS | 34 |
Perez is number two in the American League and in MLB. That's great, especially for someone who plays catcher so often but not nearly exclusively. And ironically, Perez was the designated hitter for the entire game in which he hit number 45 and supposedly tied a supposed record held by Johnny Bench. Did ESPN even check?
HR: Salvador Perez (45, off Paul Blackburn, 1st inn, 1 on, 1 out to Deep LF-CF).

In 4 of his 33 DH games Perez also caught. In one of those four games (August 25, 2021 in Houston) Perez homered but way before he switched to catcher in the bottom of the 10th inning when Houston scored the winning run.
More to the point, Perez has had 470 of his 605 plate appearances as a catcher: 77.6%. His CBS Sports advocate quoted below could have made a slightly better argument using that rather than games, which included one PA as a pinch hitter.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Royals slugger Salvador Perez tied Johnny Bench's record for homers in a season by a catcher with his 45th

ESPN does not even address home runs hit not catching, which makes that article a joke; no surprise there. CBS Sports does address it but I find the logic absurd.

Perez hit number 45, tying Hall of Famer Johnny Bench's mark

With the common parameter here being a player who has appeared as catcher in at least 75 percent of his games, here's the all-time leaderboard for home runs in a season by a catcher:
1. Johnny Bench: 45 (1970)
1. Salvador Perez: 45 (2021)
3. Javy Lopez: 43 (2003)
4. Todd Hundley: 41 (1996)
4. Roy Campanella: 41 (1953)
6. Mike Piazza: 40 (1999)
6. Mike Piazza: 40 (1997)
6. Johnny Bench: 40 (1972)
Perez has now appeared in 115 games behind the plate (111 starts) and 33 at designated hitter, but it would be absurd to detract from the accomplishment based upon this... He does have 15 homers as a DH and it's possible some would like to nitpick there

I've had my position for years. If you hit the home run when you were catching it counts as that. Otherwise, it doesn't. The following post has tables you should view:
Javy Lopez: most Home Runs in a season as a catcher. Friday, February 8, 2019
Johnny Bench hit 45 HR in 1970, 38 as a catcher:..
Javy Lopez is the champ: 42 of his 43 2003 home runs were as a catcher; one as a pinch hitter. And in only 457 at bats, 495 plate appearances..
Todd Hundley hit all 41 of his 1996 home runs as a catcher...
Roy Campanella hit 41 home runs in 1953 but one was as a PH...
Mike Piazza hit 40 home runs as a catcher twice: 1997 as a Dodger, 1999 as a Met. Todd Hundley is tied for the Met record for most home runs in a season with center fielder Carlos Beltran 2006...
40 Home Run seasons by catchers. Can Gary Sanchez join them? Sunday, February 25, 2018

Berra and Posada (NOT Sanchez): most Yankee catcher home runs. Tuesday, September 3, 2019
Yankee announcer Michael Kay continues to repeat that Yankee catcher Gary Sanchez has set a new Yankee record in tonight's game for most home runs in a season as a catcher, supposedly breaking his own record of 33 hit in 2017. That's not correct.
A "catcher" may have some data included for appearances other than as a catcher: PH, DH, another fielding position.
Yankee Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra was known for having hit 30 Home Runs (HR) in a season ... twice, 1952 and 1956. And that 30 was the American League (AL) record at the time.
Jorge Posada hit 30 in 2003.
In 2017 Yankee catcher Gary Sanchez hit 33 HR and with two home runs tonight Sanchez already has 34 in 2019.
Both Yogi Berra and Jorge Posada hit all 30 HR as catchers. Gary Sanchez has never hit 30 HR as a catcher...
Both Berra and Posada hit all 30 HR as catchers. Sanchez hit 27 as a catcher in 2017 and also so far in 2019.
