50 Home Run seasons: by Batting Order Positions (BOP).

At least 50 Home Runs (HR) for American League (AL) and National League (NL) seasons 1920-2021. Babe Ruth was the first to hit 50 HR: 54 in 1920, his first with the New York Yankees. Ruth is the only one to hit a HR as a pitcher in a 50 HR season: 1921 with the Yankees; Ruth hit two HR in that game but only the third inning HR came while the Babe was still on the mound; Ruth then moved to center field.

Yankee Aaron Judge hit 52 HR in his 2017 rookie season, 13 batting #2. Judge has hit 29 HR in 2022 his team's first 77 games (56-21). That's half the 154 game schedule through 1960. Judge may well hit 50 HR again in 2022. He has a shot at the AL records:

60 by Babe Ruth in 1927 in the 154 game schedule.

61 by Roger Maris in 1961, the first 162 game season; NL joined in 1962.

60 Home Runs in 154 games: Ruth yes. Maris no. Bonds, McGwire, Sosa? Monday, June 12, 2017

In 2022 Judge has hit three HR batting leadoff and 26 HR batting second. That seemed unusual for a 50 HR hitter and led to this post.

Aaron Judge batted leadoff six times in 2022 ... so far. Shouldn't he bat third? Saturday, June 18, 2022

Bautista and Judge hit HR in six BOP. They may have batted in others but homered only in six.

In 2022 Judge has a shot at the record for most hit at BOP #2: 47 by Stanton, now a teammate of Judge.

54 and 52 have been most frequently: seven each. 54 has Ruth twice. 52 has no repeats.

Note: The first two to finish a season with 51 home runs were Pirate Ralph Kiner and Giant Johnny Mize in 1947 in the National League. Here's how the tie was broken: Kiner hit #51 first:

Attendance: 10,330
Venue: Forbes Field
Game Duration: 2:32
Night Game, on grass
Cardinals 8, Pirates 4
HR: Ralph Kiner (51); no play by play but off Jim Hearn according to Kiner's HR log.
Pirates were 61-89 (150 games)

Attendance: 1,705
Venue: Braves Field
Game Duration: 1:30
Day Game, on grass
Giants 3, Braves 1
HR: Johnny Mize (51, off Si Johnson, 9th inn, 0 on, 0 outs to RF).
Giants were 80-70 (150 games)

Cool, right?
