Ohtani v. Ruth revisited November 18, 2022 after Ohtani finished second to Aaron Judge for MVP.

This is an updated version of the post done July 5, 2022: 28th birthday of Shohei Ohtani. Yesterday Ohtani finished second in the 2022 MVP vote to 62 Home Run Aaron Judge. Duh. Ohtani got 2 first place votes, Judge all the rest. Each league team gets two writers who vote. I wonder how the two Angels writers voted?

I like Ohtani. What's not to like? I do not like knuckleheads who distort what he does: see MLB Network for examples.

Shohei Ohtani is not a two way player and should not be MVP over Aaron Judge in 2022. Wednesday, October 12, 2022

Shohei Ohtani 2022 OPS: (DH: .906), (DH Pitching: .730 and only two Home Runs in 101 At Bats). Friday, October 14, 2022

Let's compare Ohtani and Babe Ruth on their respective ages on April 1 in seasons when Ruth was pitching a lot.

Actually, Ohtani did not pitch at all in 2019 and only one inning in 2020, the plague shortened season.

How much did Babe Ruth pitch and bat at the same time? Monday, April 9, 2018

Brian Kenny, Babe Ruth died 25 years before the designated hitter rule started! Shohei Ohtani has played SIX innings in the outfield! Friday, July 9, 2021

Ruth 1919, Ohtani 2021: hitting great and pitching well. This post covers hitting, pitching and fielding. Monday, September 27, 2021

Through the 2022 season Ohtani has played 8 innings in the outfield, none in 2022.

This post uses the current requirements to qualify for leading the league in a stat that is an average as opposed to a total:

batting: 3.1 plate appearances (PA) per scheduled game

pitching: one inning per scheduled game.

For Ruth, the number of total Red Sox American League (AL) team games are used; 1918 and 1919 had shorter seasons because of World War I (one).

BOLD indicates that he qualified:

PA:

In 1918 Ruth is credited with leading the American League (AL) in OBP and SLG but using current requirements he would not. However, in 1919 Ruth led the AL in OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+.

Ohtani qualified in 2021 and 2022. But Ohtani has not led the AL in any batting stat that is an average.

Innings:

Ruth qualified in the first four of these five seasons and almost in the fifth. In 1916 Ruth led the AL in ERA and ERA+.

Ohtani qualified in 2022: at least 162 innings; he had 166. Note his innings per month:

In the final "month" Ohtani had one more start than previous "months" and threw 38 innings, 9 more than any previous. His final otherwise meaningless start Oct. 5, 2022 of five innings increased his season total from 161 to 166 innings to qualify. The five innings also gave him a chance to be the winning pitcher, which would have made his record 16-8. But he allowed a run and was the losing pitcher: 15-9.

How about totals?

Batting:

Ruth led AL:

RuthRunsHRRBITB
1915
1916
1917
191811
191910329113284

Ruth set the season home run record for the first of four times in 1919 with 29.

Ohtani never led in any of those, although he did finish third in home runs in 2021 with 46. Ohtani led in triples in 2021 with 8 ... and also in caught stealing with 10. Ohtani stole 26 bases in 2021. In 2022: 11 SB, 9 CS.

Pitching:

In 1916 Ruth led the AL with 40 starts and 9 shutouts. In 1917 Ruth led with 35 complete games.

Ohtani never led in anything. Ohtani has 63 career starts and zero complete games.

Ruth set the World Series record of 29.66 consecutive shutout innings. Yankee Whitey Ford broke that record with 32. Ruth pitched on the Red Sox championship teams of 1916 and 1918, defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers (4-1) and Chicago Cubs (4-2). Ruth started and won one (1916) and two (1918) games.

Ohtani has never played in the post season tournament through 2022.
