Suppose Carlos Correa were a catcher, not a shortstop. No big deal? More vulnerable than J.T. Realmuto?

In the next five years who is more likely to break down: shortstop Carlos Correa or catcher J.T. Realmuto?

Mets Lindor v. Correa: 5'11" v. 6'4". Who knew? Two shortstops. Data comparison. Thursday, December 22, 2022

November 7, 2022: Granted Free Agency.

Giants cancel deal after physical exam: 13 years, $350,000,000.

Mets deal pending: 12 years, $315,000,000...

Correa has better OPS+: 129 to 117.

Mets plan to move the bigger Correa to third base ... if the deal goes through.

Correa, 28, required arthroscopic surgery to repair a fractured right fibula and minor ligament damage after he hit an RBI triple and his spike got stuck on the bag in June 2014, when he was 19 and still in the minor leagues with the Astros.

MLB rumors: Carlos Correa not interested in Mets contract restructure by Taylor Wirth sports.yahoo.com
Mon, December 26, 2022 at 10:39 PM EST

After a medical concern reportedly derailed his contract agreement with the Giants, Correa reportedly agreed to a 12-year, $315 million contract with the New York Mets, only for New York to reportedly have the same medical concern as San Francisco...

Correa is not open to the idea of restructuring his reported agreement with the Mets, which could derail the agreement if New York wishes to renegotiate.

Realmuto can be a free agent again for the 2026 season (age 35).

The current Philadelphia contract seems to be five years and about $115 million. That's less than half the length of the Met contract offer to Correa but the Philadelphia annual for Realmuto is about $23 million compared to about $26 million for Correa from the Mets.

Jorge Posada was the starting catcher for the Yankees 1998-2009. The most recent Yankee championship was in 2009. The conventional wisdom, then and now, is that a team has an advantage if it has a good hitting player at a defensive position, especially catcher. Posada OPS+: career 121, high 153.

Starting in the Posada years, I've thought that it doesn't make sense to pay for a good hitting catcher. He either gets hurt or you have to sit him so he doesn't get hurt. Either way, he's not playing.

It's best to have two good fielding catchers, preferably one righty batter, the other lefty. Both get regular rest.

If Carlos Correa were a catcher, would his past injuries be a big deal (pun intended)? Probably not as big as they are now. Shortstops can play a long time: Cal Ripken, Derek Jeter. Some have a sudden career shift: Nomar Garciaparra.

The Yankees should try to sign Correa for 2-3 years and maybe play him at third base. The only Yankee depth is at shortstop:
