You can't do worse, right? A manager could bring in anyone in the stands and not do worse than having your new pitcher get hit for a home run by the very first batter he faces. Or he could leave the previous pitcher in because he could not possibly have done any worse than giving up a home run.
This is even worse if it begins in the 8th inning and loses a lead or breaks a tie.
Look at the 8th and 11th innings. Got the picture?
Yankee starter Gerrit Cole pitched 6 strong innings. He left with a 3-1 lead and was relieved by Wandy Peralta who pitched a shutout 7th inning. Tommy Kahnle started the 8th. Yankee manager Aaron Boone pulled Kahnle with two outs and the bases loaded after a dribbler to third went for an infield hit. An INFIELD hit.

Somewhere the sun is shining. Somewhere children shout. But there is nowhere recently when an MLB manager brought in three relief pitchers in late inning game situations and they gave up home runs to the first batters faced. The FIRST batters.
Aaron Boone, how could you?
