Juan Soto would be 1 of 9 in a weak Yankee lineup. Worth $33,000,000 for one year ... and prospects?

Why rent Juan Soto for 2024? Saturday, November 25, 2023

2023 Contract Status: Signed thru 2023, 1 yr/$23M (23)

Service Time (01/2023): 4.134  •  Arb Eligible: 2024  •  Free Agent: 2025

Agents: Boras Corporation

Career OPS+ 157. In 2023 Soto played all 162 games: OPS+ 158...

Juan Soto was paid $23,000,000 in 2023 and he is arbitration eligible for the 2024 season, after which he becomes a free agent.

So all this trade talk about a team acquiring Soto "cheap" for 2024 means that Soto will be a VERY expensive one year rental.

Why trade top prospects for a rental?

Juan Soto may be paid $33,000,000 in 2023. Maybe send San Diego a broken bat to take them off the hook. But not prospects.

With Soto for the entire 2023 season, SD scored 47 more runs but won ten fewer games than expected and did not qualify for the tournament.

Here's Soto OPS for SD in the 2022 tournament:

NLWC  beat Mets  .718

NLDS   beat Dodgers  .484

NLCS  lost to Phillies 4-1  .944; 2 HR

Soto homered in the final two games against the Phillies, both losses.

In game four Soto hit a two run homer in the fifth to break a 4-4 tie. SD lost 10-6.

Yankee lineups 2009 v. 2023. 103 wins and World Series champs v. 82 wins. Sunday, December 3, 2023

Aaron Judge played only 106 games so his rate stats should be viewed with that in mind.

OPS+:

2023: Judge 175 Torres 118 ... 7 of 9 under 100 ... Oswaldo Cabrera 58

2009: Only Melky Cabrera lower than OPS+ 100: 93.

2023 Yankees: 7 of 9 bat righty. Soto's lefty bat would be a welcome addition.

Former Yankee is the catcher. How about that? Soto is the best hitter and he led the team in several stats. But he's not alone. 6 of 9 have OPS+ greater than 109. OPS+ 100 is league average.

So how much would Soto's lefty bat help the righty Yankee lineup that has only 2 of 9 with OPS+ greater than league average? Soto would make it 3 of 9. Worth $33,000,000? And prospects?
