As of this morning:
Anthony Volpe
Position: Shortstop
Bats: Right • Throws: Right
5-9, 180lb (175cm, 81kg)
Team: New York Yankees (majors)
Born: April 28, 2001
Draft: Drafted by the New York Yankees in the 1st round (30th)
Oswald Peraza
Positions: Shortstop and Second Baseman
Bats: Right • Throws: Right
6-0, 200lb (183cm, 90kg)
Team: New York Yankees (minors, 40-man)
Born: June 15, 2000
Rookie Status: Still Intact through 2023
Somewhat surprisingly Volpe won the shortstop job in spring training. Peraza also made the team but played sporadically, got injured, got sent down to AAA, where he has been hitting very well, including 10 home runs in 17 games.
Volpe has struggled but looks promising. He started slowly, adjusted, but slipped back as MLB adjusted to him. He is only 5'9" and swings very hard to generate power. Lately, he seems to be stressing his top right arm on some swings.
If the Yankees were not a team contending to qualify for the post season tournament, it might make sense to let Volpe struggle through, although, even that might harm his confidence. Sending Volpe to the minors at AAA, where he had only 99 PA might be best both for Volpe and for the Yankees. Volpe was in AAA only in 2022 and his OPS was nothing special: .718. AL so far in 2023: .721.
Peraza might give the Yankees a spark, even if he hits only American League average, which Volpe is not.
Plus, the Yankees continue to have injuries. Aaron Judge is on the injured list for the second time. Giancarlo Stanton has just returned. The Yanks cannot afford to carry Volpe.
Swap Volpe and Peraza for a month. It can't hurt, could help and will bring the situation close to the end of July trading deadline.
